Cracked ice (bingliè wén) is the classical Chinese lattice that imitates the fracture lines of ice breaking on a spring pond — a centuries-old motif for garden windows, scholar-studio screens, and tea-house doors, carried into Japanese design as a symbol of winter giving way.
About the cracked ice pattern
Its appeal is the same thing that makes it hard to fake by hand: the lines are irregular but purposeful, every fracture meeting another at a believable angle, covering the panel without ever repeating. It delivers an organic, hand-crafted read while remaining unmistakably a designed object.
Each fracture line is a bar of steel in the cut panel, so the lattice is structural by nature and the sheet stays fully connected at any size. Scale sets the shard size; bar width takes it from fine porcelain-crackle to bold timber-lattice weight.
