Phyllotaxis

The sunflower's arithmetic — seeds placed by the golden angle.

Phyllotaxis is how plants place things: each new seed or leaf rotated 137.5° — the golden angle — from the last, packing the head of a sunflower in interlocking spirals. Plot it in cut circles and a panel becomes a field of dots that is unmistakably botanical yet entirely mathematical.

About the phyllotaxis pattern

The spiral arms appear in both directions at once (count them and you'll find consecutive Fibonacci numbers), and the dot size can taper from center to rim, giving the panel a natural radial gradient few patterns can match. It reads as a sunflower head, a galaxy, or rain on water depending on scale.

Because every opening is a simple circle, this is among the most fabrication-friendly organic patterns — no sharp interior corners, even heating, happy on plasma and laser alike. Scale sets the dot pitch; density, how far the field extends.
