Sunburst

The atomic-age icon — rays breaking from a brilliant center.

The sunburst — rays radiating from a center like a stylized sun — is the emblem of mid-century optimism, from starburst clocks to motel signage. As a cut panel it delivers instant retro warmth and a focal point you can read across a parking lot.

About the sunburst pattern

Radiating rays do something graphic patterns rarely manage: they point at themselves. Whatever the panel centers on — a house number, a clock movement, a mirror — the burst aims every sightline at it, which is why the form owned 1950s wall decor and is owning it again.

Alternating ray lengths and widths give the burst its sparkle, and rotation lets you clock the rays to the panel corners. The rays anchor to a center disc and outer field so the panel cuts as one piece. Scale sets ray length; density, the ray count.
