Kumiko

Joinery-hall geometry — the fine Japanese lattice, no chisel required.

Kumiko is the Japanese craft of assembling intricate lattices from hand-fitted wooden strips, no nails or glue — work so fine that apprenticeships run a decade. This pattern brings that interlocked geometry to sheet metal, where the laser does in minutes what the chisel does in months.

About the kumiko pattern

Classic kumiko arranges a base grid and fills it with diagonal infill, producing nested diamonds and triangles that shift as you move past them. It's the most architectural of the Japanese lattices — quieter than asanoha's stars, more intricate than a plain grid — and it gives doors and dividers an unmistakable craftsman presence.

In metal the lattice becomes one continuous sheet, so it keeps its precision at sizes wooden kumiko can't reach without framing. Scale sets the grid module, and bar width takes it from fine line-work to a sturdy gate-weight grille.
